Game of Emmys: The 2018 Emmy Awards

UPDATE: Congratulations to Peter Dinklage for his win for Best Actor in a Dramatic Series, to Black Mirror: USS Callister for winning best TV Movie, to Thandie Newton for Best Actress in a Limited Series for Westworld and, of course, a big congratulations to Game of Thrones for winning the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series.

The 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards air tonight and this year is notable to fans of science fiction and fantasy. There are an unprecedented total of four Fantasy or Science Fiction television shows nominated in the Best Dramatic Series category as well as a number of other nominations that are SF or Fantasy related, and HBO’s Game of Thrones is leading the pack.

Overall, the most nominated dramas are Game of Thrones and Westworld, which have 22 and 21 nominations, respectively, when the awards’ technical categories are considered. In the category for Outstanding Drama Series Game of Thrones is nominated alongside The Handmaid’s Tale, Stranger Things and Westworld.

In the Outstanding Television Movie category HBO’s adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 got a nomination as well as Netflix’s Black Mirror: “USS Callister”, which has also picked up a nomination for Outstanding Writing. Also nominated in that category is Game of Thrones for “The Dragon and the Wolf”, Stranger Things for “Chapter Nine: The Gate” and The Handmaid’s Tale for the episode “June”. David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return was also nominated for Outstanding Writing For a Limited Series.

Actors in these series received a number of nods including Jesse Plemonsfrom Black Mirror: USS Callister for Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, Sarah Paulson from American Horror Story: Cult for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie. Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright, both from Westworld were nominated for best Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones, David Harbour from Stranger Things were nominated for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Former Doctor Who Matt Smith was nominated for his portrayal of Prince Phillip in The Crown. Joseph Fiennes was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Handmaid’s Tale. Tatiana Maslany from Orphan Black, Elisabeth Moss from The Handmaid’s Tale and Evan Rachel Wood from Westworld were all nominated for the best Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Lena Headey from Game of Thrones, Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things, Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski and Alexis Bledel from The Handmaid’s Tale, and Thandie Newton from Westworld were all nominated for best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

The 70th Annual Emmy Awards airs tonight on NBC at 4:30 pm Pacific Time
